During the week of Oct. 13-19, Hawaii Island police arrested 18 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.

During the week of Oct. 13-19, Hawaii Island police arrested 18 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 6; South Hilo; 5; South Kohala, 3; Puna, 2; Ka‘u and North Hilo, 1 each.

So far this year, there have been 927 DUI arrests compared to 1,045 during the same period last year, a decrease of 11.3 percent.

There have been 1,244 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,101 during the same period last year, an increase of 13 percent.

So far this year, there have been 10 official traffic fatalities compared to 23 during the same period last year, a decrease of 56.5 percent.

To date, six of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — three to drugs, the other three to a combination of drugs and alcohol.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
